A food and nutrition surveillance (FNS) system is a mechanism to transfer food and nutrition data into action through formulation, modification and application of the food and nutrition policy of a country.

Surveillance should provide ongoing information about the nutritional conditions the population and the factors that influence them. This information will provide a basis for decision to be made by those responsible for policy, planning and the management of program relating to improvement of food consumption pattern and nutritional status.
